What is Replumbing?

The standard plumbing practice is to provide many inlets from a single main line to each apartment. So there is no single place to meter. One has to fix a meter at every inlet. But doing so will mean that meters are in the ducts and at different heights, making reading them very difficult. There is also the cost of multiple meters.

Replumbing solves all that. It is a method where the existing plumbing lines are changed such that one single line branches out into the multiple inlets of an apartment. Now, one meter on this single line is enough for that apartment.

Does your Building need it?

Do you want to go in for water metering, but find that the multiple meters cost too much (bear in mind smart meters can have monthly subscription costs too?) Is your plumbing line old and needing service anyway? In many cases, replumbing solves two problems at once. Old and ageing plumbing lines can be replaced to take of water metering with a single meter, with a slight incremental cost.

There are many types of water meters used in residential lines. Mechanical meters can be of single jet, multi-jet or positive displacement (PD) type.

Which type should you go for?

There are many types of water meters used in residential lines. Mechanical meters can be of single jet, multi-jet or positive displacement (PD) type.
  • Will you be able to take manual readings every month?
  • Does your apartment provide Solar Hot Water? (If so a seperate metermay be required for this.)
  • How good is your water quality?
  • Reduce intial and running costs in case of smart meters.
  • Do you need (near) real-time data, hourly data, daily data or will monthly data suffice?
  • Do you want the water bills to go to your existing Society management software?
  • Will alarms on abnormal flow help?
Mechanical meters The 'jet' type meters have a fan that rotates on water flow and converts this rotation to quantity. The PD type meters have a nutating cylinder that fills one half, rotates and empties, while the other half fills up.
Ultrasonic meters Ultrasonic meters are now becoming more popular and affordable. They work on the principle of change of speed of sound in still and moving water. These meters have no moving parts and are less prone to blockages.
Manual read vs. Smart meters Water meters become Smart when they can measure and transmit the data remotely to the Cloud or a cosumer's App. They can also have algorithms to detect abnormal flow such as leaks and burst pipes. Manual meters have to be read in person regularly.
